However, when I powered it up using a newly bought 9V battery, it doesn't seem to work. Switching the dial will only move the decimal point on the LCD, and display the "HV" warning if the dial is in high voltage range. Nothing else seems to work, I can't measure voltage or resistance, nothing else is shown on the display.
Even worse, the LCD will fade away and become blank after 5 seconds if the dial is not moved. At first I suspected the battery, but replacing the battery does not help. I use my analog multimeter to check the fuse onboard and it seems OK. Anything else I could do to fix the multimeter? Looking forward to any advice.

Sometimes referred to as a volt-ohm meter VOMit is a logical development of the electrical meter, providing a general-purpose instrument.
Analog multimeters were generally based on a moving-coil indicator, in which a pointer moves across a graduated scale. That is why we take pride in our ability to follow rigid procedures but what differentiates us is our willingness to meet your business goals. We can perform specific portions of the calibration based on your quality requirements enabling us to strike the optimal balance between quality objectives and cost.
This is accomplished through the use of our proprietary procedures and integrated processes. Custom-Cal also offers on-site Multimeter DMM calibration service and expedited services to meet the needs of our customers. The instruments listed below are a sample of what we calibrate and can possibly repair.
Price does not in most cases include measurement performance data. Pricing does include NIST traceable calibration and issue of a calibration certificate and calibration label. Pricing may vary slightly due to volume and location of laboratory supporting calibration.
It only takes a minute to sign up. I am new to Electronics and doing a hobby project. I have a DTD Multimeter. I tried to follow the hack mentioned on Instructables. The "DTD" is made by dozens of eastern factories, as is the S by the way. Undoubtedly the origin of it is somewhere, actually using the prescribed intersil chip.
If you really want to, it is probably possible to find out the original intended probably also intersil controller and the assumption that the signal pin is in the same spot on the knock-off meters is a reasonably safe one. But then, do be aware that the layout of the front switch is very likely to be entirely different, so you will have to adapt the solution to take that into account.
The best way to find out which pin to use, probably, is just look at the PCB, identify the pins that seem like they are connected in similar ways, and measure them with another multimeter. The pin that gives a clear and fairly accurate 0mV to mV during a full scale voltage measurement is probably the one you want.
Fitting the Battery
You can also scan all pins, for example set the multimeter to 0V to 2V scale, measure 2V or a single cell battery at 1. There may be more by coincidence, but then measure those probably not more than a couple over more input voltages over the entire range as said before. Another thing to be aware of is the fact that this trick is not very accurate. You are always going to get less accuracy than the device itself, but this one doesn't sport accurate voltage reference to measure against or high precision ADC, or low tolerance, low drift components, so the accuracy isn't going to be top-shelf.
So don't expect to be making single millivolt measurements with reliability on the PC. The multimeter itself may drift a bit more than by design after mod, but shouldn't be too noticeable.

It only takes a minute to sign up. A digital multimeter will only be able to meet its specifications when it is within a certain environment. Conditions such as temperature, humidity and the like will have impact on the performance. Also conditions such as line voltage can affect the performance. In order to ensure that the digital multimeter is able to operate within its uncertainty specification, it is necessary to ensure that the external conditions are met.
Outside this range the errors will increase and the readings can no longer be guaranteed. A further element to be considered is the calibration period of the digital multimeter. As all circuits will drift with time, the DMM will need to be periodically re-calibrated to ensure that it is operating within its specification.
The calibration period will form part of the specification for the DMM. The most usual calibration period is a yearbut some digital multimeter specifications may state a 90 day calibration period. The 90 day period will enable a tighter specification to be applied to the digital multimeter, allowing it to be used in more demanding applications. When looking at the calibration period of the digital multimeter, it should be remembered that calibration will form a significant element of the cost of ownership and after some years will be significantly above that of any depreciation.
A long calibration period for the digital multimeter is normally to be advised, except when particularly demanding testing is required. Is it necessary to calibrate a digital multimeter every year?
From my understanding, only analog multimeters require calibration. You don't have to calibrate it every year. Please take note of the quote: "A long calibration period for the digital multimeter is normally to be advised, except when particularly demanding testing is required.
However, your belief that "only analog multimeter require calibration" is dead wrong. The distinction between analog and digital in this case only applies to the display.
In both cases, if the analog circuits get out of whack, the meter will give bad results. How to Calibrate Inexpensive Multimeters
A problem is more likely to be noticed in a digital meter simply because DMMs make small errors easier to see. I work for a company that makes medical instruments. Similar to Stephen Colling's answer, UL audits our facilities once a year, so we have one of our meters calibrated a month or so before the audit. The meter we have calibrated is a high-end Fluke. We also have another half-dozen or so cheaper DMM's that have a sticker on them that says "Calibration not required".
So we don't have to have all of our meters calibrated. UL seems fine with that.A premium membership for higher-level suppliers.
